I'd like to see a reasonably major political candidate, say mayor of a good-sized city or larger, donate half of their campaign funds to non-profits and aid organizations helping their constituents while challenging their opponents to do the same. Not only would it be a much better use of funds than still more attack-ads, I think it could be very effective way to get out the vote, or raise even more funds. ("I care about this city and I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is")

It's more impressive if said candidate used his own money, as opposed to money other people gave him to campaign. Many of these pols are independently wealthy, after all. At least my mayor is.

I would imagine if you were the kind of candidate to do that, your contributors would be the kind of people who liked that.

I love that idea! Not sure exactly how pratical it would be since most people lower than say US Senate don't do anything but local mailings, and don't have all "that" much money, but it would be an excellent gesture and possibly more effective than those mailings that everyone just recycles
