Jun. 16th, 2003 12:59 pmThe questions I owe are coming, I swear. One of these days.
The main part of the post is to annouce my new back-of-the-brain project/mental kickball. I have found the worst mathbook ever. It is entitled "Investigating Algebra, a Novel Approach to Abstract Algebra" and what I though was a pun unworthy even of
battle_of_wit turned out to be true. It is a cheesy novel masqerading as a textbook.
It gets worse. The main character, Les, is a misogynistic bastard. He, 30 pages after it is mentioned to him, still cannot handle the concept of 24 year old females being called women. He also dislikes smart girls, because they argue a lot, and show him up. The secondary character is a girl named Sara. She is female, brown haired, and from Minnesota. By chapter 42, she and Les have fallen madly in Love. For the record, Robin and I will both cause severe bodily harm to anyone who insinuates we resemble Sara in the slightest.
This brings me to the mental project I now contemplate. The Rocky Horrer Math Show. This book cries out for someone shouting Asshole every time Les opens his mouth. That, and "this book has no math". I'm currently working on a Math Warp, with multiplying on the left and the right. (It is, after all, abstract algebra) Any helpful suggestions, particularly from those who have had the, perhaps misnamed, opportunity to read some of this novel, would be most welcome.
As a side note, the copy I've acquired is labled a preliminary edition, and it appears that no mention of it has been made in the Library of Congress. Somehow, I'm not surprised.
